I am now working from a new book “10 Granny Squares 30 Bags” by Margaret Hubert. It is printed in US English so a mind-bending translation is required. Single crochet means double crochet, double means treble, half double means half treble and treble means double treble. Seriously, when I was first learning to read patterns this fact blew my mind. Even though I can follow a diagram, I usually need to cross-reference the written instructions as well. I used to have to carefully and painfully rewrite a US pattern before I could use it and I would often just abandon the pattern altogether.
These days using the combination of the diagram and written instructions I can translate most patterns as I crochet. Even so, I don’t purchase patterns written in US English. This pattern can be found on page 7, it measures 14 cm x 14 cm.
